Lifting and Carrying Loads

Anyone who assesses load limits, applies lifting techniques correctly, and uses technical aids protects their back, joints, and intervertebral discs. Your employees learn to lift, carry, and set down loads in a back-friendly way.

Challenge

Musculoskeletal disorders are the most common cause of incapacity for work in Germany, and a large proportion of them can be traced back to manual lifting and carrying. The Ordinance on Health and Safety Requirements for the Manual Handling of Loads at Work (LasthandhabV) requires employers to assess physical strain, provide aids, and instruct employees. Incorrect technique, loads that are too heavy, and twisted posture often only show up years later as chronic complaints.

Learning objectives
  • Your employees understand how the spine and intervertebral discs are strained during lifting.
  • Your employees estimate load weights and load limits using the key indicator method.
  • Your employees apply the correct lifting and carrying technique: close to the body, straight back, lifting with the legs.
  • Your employees use aids such as pallet trucks, hand trucks, and carrying straps, and they work as a team.
  • Your employees prevent complaints through compensatory exercises and ergonomic workplace design.
